Walk for Humanity

A group of Somali community leaders in Portland have organized a 4 mile walk through Portland on September 24th at 11am to call attention to the famine in the Horn of Africa region.  Proceeds from the walk will benefit the American Red Cross and their Horn of Africa relief efforts.

Members of the Somali Community are joining together to raise both awareness and funds to support the Red Cross relief efforts in the Horn of Africa. Famine has been declared in five areas in southern Somalia and many refugees are still fleeing to overflowing camps in neighboring countries. The slow onset disaster of a three-year drought in the Horn of Africa has resulted in the driest period on record in the region. The drought has led to crop failure, scarce water sources, low food supplies, livestock deaths and the migration of residents from the most affected areas. In total, more than 12 million people have been impacted in Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and most severely, Somalia.

Despite massive humanitarian efforts to scale up the response to this crisis, the situation continues to deteriorate. Famine has been declared in five areas in southern Somalia, and many refugees are still fleeing to overflowing camps in neighboring countries.  Help is needed now more than ever.
